How Many Bundles of Shingles Make a Square? By Brand and Product

Most asphalt shingles come three bundles to a square, but not all of them, and a square on the wrapper does not always cover a full roofing square. Here are the figures for common shingle lines, side by side.

Check the wrapper of the exact product you buy, then let the shingle calculator turn your roof into bundles with that figure.

Bundles, coverage and shingles per square

Each row is copied from the maker's technical data sheet or specification for that shingle line. Coverage is stated per square or per bundle, as each maker prints it.

What the numbers show

  • Three bundles to a square is the most common packing, which is why the calculator starts at 3 bundles. At least one premium line packs four lighter bundles to a square instead.
  • A sales square is not always a full roofing square. Several architectural lines cover a little less than 100 sq ft per square, because the coverage depends on the shingle size and its exposure.
  • Three-tab shingles come with more pieces per square than architectural shingles, since each piece is smaller.
  • Exposure, the part of each shingle left visible, differs between lines, and it changes how much roof one bundle covers.

Ordering with these figures

Work out the roof surface in squares, add the extra for waste, then multiply by the bundles per square for your product and round up. The roof square calculator gives the squares, and the roofing calculator covers the whole roof.

Starter strips and ridge caps are separate products with their own coverage, so count them from their own wrappers.

Common questions

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Most lines in the table pack three bundles to a square, and one premium line packs four. Always read the wrapper of the product you buy.

Does one square of shingles cover a full roofing square?

Not always. A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof, but several architectural lines state slightly less coverage per square, so buy by the coverage on the wrapper.

Why do three-tab shingles have more pieces per square?

Each three-tab piece is smaller than an architectural shingle, so it takes more of them to cover the same area.
